How BC Transit is Funded

Funding
Transit service is funded through three main sources: provincial contributions, local government contributions and passenger fares.
The total cost to run the service in 2024/25 was $477.3 million. Provincial contributions, which include operating contributions (transfers), amortization of deferred capital contributions, Provincial Health Authorities and the BC Bus Pass Program, accounted for $227.7 million or 48.1 percent of total funding.
Local governments contributed property taxation (transfers) totaling $143.9 million or 30.4 percent of total funding. Revenue from passenger fares (operations), advertising, investments, carbon credits and fuel tax totaled $101.5 million or 21.5 percent of total funding.
BC Transit by the numbers:
- Total capital expenditures in 2024/25 of $147.1 million.
- Provides services to over 130 communities across B.C. in collaboration with local government partners, including the Victoria Regional Transit Commission and regional hospital districts.
- Contracts with 17 operating companies across the province, (9 private, 5 not-for-profit, 4 municipal).
- Transports more than 54 million passengers annually.
- Serves more than 1.9 million people in B.C.
- Operates 48 transit systems – conventional, community, custom and paratransit.
- Owns a fleet of over 1,100 double decker, heavy-, medium- and light-duty buses.
- Total operating expenditures in 2024/25 of $398.0 million.
