Once again, members of UNIFOR Local 333, CUPE 4500, and MoveUp have been honoured by the United Way for carrying out another extremely successful campaign. The Labour Partnership Spirit Award recognizes unions or locals for significant engagement and involvement in an employee campaign.
“I am honoured to accept this United Way Spirit Award for Labour Partnership on behalf of our members in a year where so many people have been struggling,” said Chris Tolhurst, Transit Operator and fundraising committee member. “Our union members did not forget, and stepped up again to help our local community. We at BC Transit have been very fortunate to have continued working throughout the pandemic, which has allowed us to make these donations.”
BC Transit, along with our union partners donated over $43,000 in support of the United Way and their work in helping children, youth, families and seniors in Greater Victoria. That’s an increase of more than $6,000 over the previous year. Roughly $30,000 of the donation money was raised from the payroll deductions program staff opted-in to. The remaining amount was raised from other fundraising initiatives including an online auction and staff cookbook.
BC Transit, Unifor Local 333, CUPE 4500, and MoveUp are proud to continue supporting the United Way, where the money stays in the community and supports important partner organizations. We thank all of our staff who helped us raise this money for Greater Victoria.
We encourage all staff to continue participating in our many annual fundraising events and to opt-in to the payroll deduction program. For just $5 a paycheck, you can help make a difference in someone’s life.
