MERRITT
– The City of Merritt and BC Transit would like to remind motorists, yielding
to buses is not just a common courtesy – it’s the law.
Under the Motor Vehicle Act, section 169.1, drivers must yield to BC Transit
and other vehicles that fall under the British Columbia Transit Act, when the
transit operator signals or gives other displays of intention to re-enter the
traffic flow.
“We are concerned about the number of incidents being reported by Merritt
transit drivers. They are raising the alarm about reckless and dangerous behavior;
where other vehicles are blocking or cutting them off,” said BC Transit
Director of Safety and Environment John Palmer. “We urge motorists to share
the road, make the safe and lawful choice and yield to transit buses.”
