Whistler – As of May 2017, all buses in Whistler will be fully equipped with specialized bike racks, with installation slated to begin in April 2017. This announcement follows the successful trial of two VelPorter bike rack systems this past fall.
“Bike racks provide an excellent opportunity for locals and tourists alike to more easily explore the Whistler region using sustainable public transportation,” said West Vancouver-Sea-to-Sky MLA Jordan Sturdy. “I am excited to see the expansion of this popular equipment across the entire Whistler fleet.”
Specially designed for the types of mountain bikes commonly found in Whistler, the VelPorter 2 is a heavy-duty rack which provides extra room for thicker tires. 23 additional bike racks will be installed throughout April, bringing the total to 25.
“I’m happy to see the expansion of the VelPorter 2 racks across the entire transit system”, said Resort Municipality of Whistler Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden. “Combining bussing and biking in Whistler has never been easier, and we are looking forward to the benefits it will provide commuters and explorers alike.”
In 2015/16, BC Transit provided over 2.5 million passenger trips in Whistler. The region is also one of the most popular BC Transit system for cyclists and mountain bikers.
“We’re pleased to work with the Resort Municipality of Whistler who are leaders in sustainable transportation options,” said Manuel Achadinha, BC Transit President and Chief Executive Officer. “The incorporation of these new bike racks will allow BC Transit to better connect people and communities.”
