Want to be a BC Transit operator? Come to our recruitment fair

Victoria – Ever thought about becoming a transit operator and wondering how you can get behind the wheel? You can learn more about the paid support BC Transit provides to the right customer focused candidates at a recruitment fair on December 10 at 520 Gorge Road East.

“The Victoria Regional Transit Commission wants to get more people out of their vehicles and onto transit or involved in other active modes of transportation. Transit operators help us realize this vision,” said Susan Brice, Chair of the Victoria Regional Transit Commission. “I would encourage anyone interested in pursuing a career as a transit operator to come to the recruitment fair.”

The recruitment fair will provide information about the paid training to become a transit operator, the application process, and an overall description of the role from current BC Transit operators.

BC Transit is currently hiring for at least 20 transit operators in the Victoria region before April 2017. The main reason for the current and upcoming vacancies is planned retirements.

“I love my job at BC Transit. I love working with people, the flexibility of our working days and helping people get to where they want to go,” said Sandra Hunt, a BC Transit Operator for 14 years. “I felt supported right from the application process to getting on the road. I really appreciated the training and support that was provided to pass the ICBC road test with confidence.”

BC Transit places a high importance on hiring the right people as transit operators, and you can apply online at BCTransit.com. If you’re shortlisted, the process includes an interview and a short trainability assessment behind the wheel of a bus with a professional BC Transit Safety & Training Officer.

If you’re hired to be operator, BC Transit provides a comprehensive paid training program that will allow you to receive your class two license with air brakes. The Operator training program will get you ready to welcome customers on a BC Transit bus that includes double deckers, community shuttles and conventional low floor buses. BC Transit prides itself on having over 98 per cent success rate of people completing the training program receiving their full class two license with air brakes.

“Over 500 Transit Operators in the region provide exceptional service every day and in every condition,” said Brian Anderson, BC Transit Vice-President of Operations and Chief Operating Officer. “Our unique training program ensures they have the necessary skills and confidence to do so safely.”
