Subject: Technical Difficulties with Network and Business Systems
As you are aware, we are experiencing technical difficulties. In addressing this issue, we detected that there was a threat to our systems and we took measures to neutralize and contain that threat.
As a result, we have shut down our network and all systems. This has resulted in a disruption to our customer facing applications, including our website and our Victoria customer call centre. Transit service has not been impacted and we continue to focus on delivering transit service as normal.
We are also working with police agencies and conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the full details of the threat. We are treating this matter very seriously and have notified all of the relevant regulatory bodies, including the Office of the Information and Privacy Commission for BC and the Office of the Chief Information Officer of BC. In addition, we have brought in technical experts to support us in this matter.
We do not comment on the details of ongoing investigations. However, we can advise you that we do not have any information at this time that would lead us to conclude that your personal information is at risk. Nevertheless, it is always a good idea to be vigilant about protecting your personal information and we are making available a tip sheet of things that you can do to help protect the security of your personal information and to detect and prevent fraud.
The IT department continues to develop a plan to bring our systems back online as soon as possible.
We will provide updates as more information becomes available.
Thank you for your patience and support at this time.
Manuel Achadinha, President and Chief Executive Officer of BC Transit
