VICTORIA – Once again this year, BC Transit is proud to be a partner in the second annual Car Free YYJ 2016 on Sunday, June 19. With a nine-block stretch of Douglas Street being blocked off to traffic for much of the day, there will be changes in regular transit service in the downtown core.
From 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., buses that use Douglas Street will be re-routed onto Blanshard between Bay and Courtney Streets. Temporary stops will be set up on Blanshard, corresponding to the stop locations on Douglas.
For east-west routes, Johnson, Yates and Fort Streets will all be open, with traffic control personnel on-hand to ensure pedestrian safety.
The re-routing will affect transit service throughout the region on June 19: the online Trip Planner and schedules will not be accurate for routes affected. Customers in the Capital Region should expect longer travel times and be patient when waiting at bus stops. People taking transit to BC Ferries are encouraged to take an earlier trip to be sure of being on-time.
BC Transit will be present at Car Free YYJ, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with an information tent and offering a chance to win a monthly bus pass.
Since Car Free YYJ is intended to celebrate life without private automobiles, people are encouraged to take public transit to get to and from the event. Car Free YYJ 2016 also boasts three licensed areas (there was only one last year), so let BC Transit do the driving and get you home safely.
