VICTORIA – Summertime means beaches, picnics in the park, long walks in Butchart Gardens and getaways by ferry: and public transit can get you where you want to go safely and economically.
Many BC Transit routes will bring you to the downtown core, to enjoy the vibrant Inner Harbour, Government Street and popular restaurants and night-spots. Take the 11 UVic / Tillicum Mall to Gyro Park on Cadboro Bay, the 71, 72 or 75 to Elk/Beaver Lake Park, and the 70, 71 and 72 will get you to Sidney-by-the-Sea; the 61 Sooke will take you to any of the many entrances to the scenic Galloping Goose Regional Trail.
As of June 27, some routes serving popular destinations will offer increased service during the summer. The 53 Atkins will extend its route to Thetis Lake, while the 75 Saanichton / Royal Oak/Downtown and 81 Swartz Bay / Butchart Gardens routes will add more trips on Saturdays so that local residents and visitors alike can enjoy that world-famous landmark. They will also continue to serve Butchart Gardens until ten minutes after the 10:00 p.m. closing time.
The 70 Swartz Bay / Downtown will add a new permanent trip on Sunday mornings, to get customers to Swartz Bay in time for the 7:00 a.m. BC Ferries sailing to Tsawwassen.
Purchase the convenient $5 DayPASS onboard the bus and you can ride buses all day anywhere in the region, from Sooke to Oak Bay, from Dallas Road to Swartz Bay. An adult with a DayPASS may also bring up to four children (age 12 and under) at no extra charge.
“Greater Victoria has so much summer fun to offer,” said Paul Nursey, President and CEO of Tourism Victoria. “Taking the bus to explore local attractions is tourist-friendly, family-friendly and wallet-friendly!” In fact, Tourism Victoria recently featured Victoria transit operator Terri-Lynn Ash on its Tourism Unexpected blog.
“With parking, traffic and the price of fuel, it just makes sense to get on the bus,” added BC Transit President and CEO Manuel Achadinha. “We’re pleased to provide a reliable, convenient service to local residents and our many visitors.”
For the summer, service levels will be reduced on routes going to schools and post-secondary institutions, and the 17 UVic / Downtown and 19 Hillside Mall will be cancelled altogether for the season. This is to match reduced demand; these services will all resume in September.
