Summer Schedule Starts with Free Rides on Canada Day

KAMLOOPS – Annual summer service changes are coming into effect in the Kamloops Transit System. From June 29, 2014 to August 29, 2014 routes #1 Tranquille, #2 Parkcrest, #3 Westsyde, #7 Aberdeen and #9 Gleneagles will be reduced to 30 minute frequency during peak hours.

In order to best match ridership demand, transit hours are conserved in the summer months when most schools are on hiatus. Regular service hours and peak frequency will return when the school year starts on September 2, 2014.

The City of Kamloops and BC Transit want to encourage everyone to celebrate Canada Day safely. Transit trips are FREE on Tuesday, July 1, 2014.

Riverside Park is putting on a patriotic party from 7 am with a pancake breakfast until 10 pm when the fireworks show brings the Canada Day festivities to an end.

BC Transit will be operating a Saturday schedule with extended service on major routes to accommodate customers who are attending the fireworks display at Riverside Park.

“Canada Day is a great opportunity for families to get together and celebrate,” said Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure and Kamloops-South Thompson MLA. “This year it is even easier to join in the festivities, with free transit access to the park.”
“Providing free transit on Canada Day lessens congestion in the downtown area, especially while we have some ongoing construction. It also helps reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions and introduces users to transit that may not otherwise have ridden the bus,” said Mayor Peter Milobar.

“We hope Kamloops residents take advantage of the free rides on Canada Day,” said BC Transit President and CEO Manuel Achadinha. “By providing a free service to this important community celebration, we hope to reward loyal customers and encourage new riders to experience the benefits of public transportation.”
