Ridership on the Rise in the Victoria Region

VICTORIA – BC Transit and the Victoria Regional Transit Commission (VRTC) are pleased to announce ridership is on the rise – up 5.5% over last year. In its Annual Report, BC Transit recorded 25,430,368 passenger trips in 2013/14 as compared to 24,112,232 trips in 2012/13.

2013/14 was a recovery year for the Victoria Regional Transit System following labour disruptions in the previous year. The increase in ridership is also linked to an addition of 5,000 annual service hours and two extra buses in the fleet. Scheduling efficiencies, including taking four University of Victoria bound routes off Ring Road, helped make the system more efficient and effective.

“The Victoria transit system continues to strive to meet the needs and expectations of all its users,” said Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “The fact that many passengers on many routes thank their drivers on exiting is proof that they value the service.”

“It has been an exciting year for the Victoria Regional Transit system and the Commission,” said VRTC Chair Susan Brice. “With added service hours, more fleet resources and the construction of the region’s first-ever bus lanes on Douglas Street, our system is maturing and growing stronger.”

“On behalf of all BC Transit employees, we would like to thank our customers for coming back in such strong numbers,” said BC Transit President and CEO Manuel Achadinha “BC Transit is committed to providing safe, convenient and effective transportation choices that will attract new riders.”
