Ridership on the Rise in Squamish

SQUAMISH, BC – The District of Squamish and BC Transit are delighted to announce ridership is on the rise – up 14.7% over last year. In its Annual Report, BC Transit recorded 253,797 passenger trips in 2013/14 as compared to 221,231 trips in 2012/13.

The increase in passenger trips is likely attributed to service improvements that were introduced last fall. Nearly 3,100 annual service hours and a new Route #4 Tantalus were added, making transit more efficient and effective for Squamish residents.

“An increase in service last year has resulted in a big increase in ridership in Squamish,” said West Vancouver-Sea to Sky MLA Jordan Sturdy. “It’s great to see local government and BC Transit working together to improve transit options for residents.”

“This is very good news as we have invested heavily in transit to add 3,100 new service hours through the new Tantalus route and extended evenings, Sunday and holiday service,” says District of Squamish Mayor Rob Kirkham. “We are thrilled to see this level of growth as it will help fuel ongoing transit improvements to meet the changing needs of the community. Such improvements will help in the ongoing development of our comprehensive multi-modal transportation system for Squamish, of which transit has an increasing role to play.”

“With strong local leadership we were able to expand service hours and coverage areas, making transit more efficient and effective for all,” said BC Transit President and CEO Manuel Achadinha. “Congratulations to our partners at the District of Squamish.”
