Ridership on the Rise

DAWSON CREEK – The City of Dawson Creek and BC Transit are delighted to announce transit ridership is on the rise – up 3.5% over last year. In its recently publish annual report, BC Transit recorded 126,550 passenger trips in 2012/13 compared to 122,253 in 2011/12.

The growth in ridership follows an overhaul of the Dawson Creek system in February 2012 that was shaped by customer feedback. At that time, a new route was added with coverage to Driver House, the Senior Citizens’ Hall, the Co-op Mall and Dawson Mall.

The Dawson Creek transit system continues to strive to match service with demand. Earlier this year, the #1 Northside was adjusted, on a trial basis, to serve the residential subdivisions along 17th Street. The seasonal trial has ended, and a second larger trial is being considered for September 2, 2013 to June 30, 2014.

“We are pleased to see customers are helping us shape and grow transit in Dawson Creek,” said BC Transit President and CEO Manuel Achadinha. “The increase in passenger trips is a validation of our continued efforts to make public transit efficient and effective for all.”

“The City is pleased to see ridership usage increasing”, said Acting Mayor Shaely Wilbur. “Access to the Dawson Creek transit system gives residents options to get to work, go to school, visit friends or go to a doctor’s appointment.”

“Dawson Creek has a transit system that is affordable and efficient and I’m not surprised to see that ridership has increased,” said Peace River South MLA Mike Bernier. “Our transit system is an excellent option for getting around the community and we continue to support a strong partnership with BC Transit and the City to ensure they are meeting the needs of our citizens.”
