NANAIMO, B.C. – The Regional District of Nanaimo Transit system
will see a number of fare and service changes take effect in early March.
BC Transit and the Regional District of Nanaimo are pleased to announce the
addition of 5000 hours of service enabling a number of transit service improvements.
Effective March 4, 2012, the transit service will see more frequent trips to
commercial areas and major hubs including Departure Bay Ferry Terminal, Vancouver
Island University and Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, and will increase convenience
for residents who use the system for day-to-day commuting.
March 4, 2012 Transit service improvements include:
#3 Hospital offers more direct service between Diver’s Lake area and
Woodgrove Centre, and more direct service to the industrial park area of Boban/Mostar
#4 VI University offers more service
More service to the BC Ferries terminal at Departure Bay
#8 South & #9 North provide express service on select trips between
downtown and BC Ferries
#15 VIU Connector offers weekend service
#99 Deep Bay, transit service to RDN Electoral Area ‘H’
In November, the Regional District of Nanaimo approved a fare change effective
March 1, 2012. Cash fares will increase 25¢: from $2.25 to $2.50 for adults
and from $2.00 to $2.25 for students and seniors. Tickets, monthly passes, DayPASSES
and ProPASSES will increase accordingly (see Table A). The last transit fare
increase in the Regional District was in January of 2008.

Funding for the local transit system is cost-shared between the Regional District
of Nanaimo and BC Transit.
Decisions about fares, routes and service levels are made by the Regional District
Board, based on information and planning provided by RDN Transit and BC Transit.
