Record Ridership on Salt Spring Island

SALT SPRING ISLAND – For the second consecutive year transit ridership is growing on Salt Spring Island – up 13.7% over last year. In its recently published annual report, BC Transit recorded 93,013 passenger trips in 2012/13 compared to 81,787 trips in 2011/12.

Last year, Salt Spring Island ridership grew up 29%.

The strong and steady growth is linked to BC Transit’s efforts to better coordinate our schedules with ferry traffic. The introduction of evening, weekend and statutory holiday service in July 2011 also made transit more efficient and effective for locals and visitors.

“We are proud of the combined 42.7% climb in ridership on Salt Spring Island over the past two years,” said Manuel Achadinha. “Together with our partners, the Capital Regional District and the Salt Spring Island Transportation Commission we are setting record ridership levels and delivering on our core value of sustainability.”

“We are pleased to again be celebrating ridership success with BC Transit. From the start it has been a terrific partnership between BC Transit, CRD, Salt Spring Island taxpayers and, of course, transit riders. To have nearly 100,000 rides annually in such a short time is truly remarkable! ” said Wayne McIntyre, CRD Electoral Director, Salt Spring Island.
