Bus stops look a little different depending on how they’re used. Some have shelters or benches, while others are marked with a bus stop sign. Many signs also list the routes that stop there. Look for the BC Transit sign, which typically looks like this:
Flagging the Bus
In some rural communities, there are no marked bus stops. On designated roads, you can wave to flag the bus. Check with your local transit office to see if this service is in your area.
When you flag the bus, stand in a safe spot where the driver can see you and pull over, like a driveway. Do the same when you want to get off. Ask the driver to stop in a safe place close to where you need to go.
Bus Destination Display
Every bus has an overhead sign at the front showing the route number and name. If you see “Not in Service,” it means the driver is on a break, travelling to the next route, or heading to or from the garage.
Transit Wave
Some stops are shared by more than one route. Help your driver by giving a small wave as the bus approaches. Buses don’t stop at every stop unless someone signals.
At busy stops, more than one bus may arrive at once. Walk to your bus and wait until it has fully stopped before you approach the doors.
On the Bus
We’re here to get you where you need to go safely and comfortably. You can help by travelling with care and following a few simple safety tips.
Fares
Have your fare ready before boarding so you can take your seat quickly. Drivers and fareboxes don’t provide change.
Safety
For your safety:
Hold on whenever the bus is moving.
Keep hold of children, strollers, and parcels.
Take the first available seat if you feel unsteady.
At the End of Your Trip
When you’re getting close to your stop, remember these tips:
Ring the buzzer early so the driver can stop safely.
Use handrails as you move to the doors. Wait until the bus stops before walking if you’re unsteady.
On double-decker buses, move to the lower level before your stop and hold the handrail as you go down the stairs.
Be careful stepping down to the curb or street.
Lost something? Items are held in Lost & Found for at least 14 days. Call the number in your Rider’s Guide or check your local transit website.
