Public engagement creates a better Transit Future for Dawson Creek

Dawson Creek – Following a successful round of public engagement, BC Transit is working with the City of Dawson Creek to improve transit in the community.

“Our transit system has to be effective, efficient and, most of all, it needs to meet the needs of current and future transit riders,” said Peace River South MLA Mike Bernier. “Being able to understand the demands of Dawson Creek residents through face-to-face engagement allows us to make real improvements that can boost the usability of public transportation.”

The proposed changes to the system include modifying routes to better serve the Alaska Highway and the Kenn Borek Aquatic Centre. In order to make these changes, under-utilized resources will be reallocated from elsewhere in the transit system. Full details about the proposed changes can be found at bctransit.com/dawson-creek/transit-future. Implementation of approved changes is expected to occur after planned 10th Street bridge replacement that is planned for summer 2017.

“Providing comprehensive public transit services creates an affordable, reliable and sustainable transportation option for Dawson Creek residents,” said Dawson Creek Mayor Dale Bumstead. “Understanding how we can serve our community better through the optimization of routes will create a more robust transit system, that will then help us to increase ridership.”

Public engagement activities included four open house sessions, and an online survey. This engagement was an integral part of the 2016 Service Performance Check-In for Dawson Creek.

“Connecting people and communities is our mission, and undertaking meaningful engagement helps us put customers at the very center of that goal,” said Manuel Achadinha, BC Transit President and Chief Executive Officer “By consulting local residents, we are creating a transit system that works for the community it serves.”

The Dawson Creek Transit System currently has three routes and welcomes over 105,000 passengers onboard each year. For more information about transit in Dawson Creek, visit bctransit.com/dawson-creek or call 250-782-4636.
