Potential Service Disruption Facing Public Transit in the Cowichan Valley Regional District

COWICHAN VALLEY REGIONAL DISTRICT – BC Transit would like to notify its valued customers in the Cowichan Valley Regional District of a potential job action which could occur as early as Monday, February 1.

The labour dispute is between BC Transit’s contractor – First Canada – and their unionized employees. First Canada operates the fixed-route service in the Cowichan Valley and Ladysmith, as well as the commuter service connecting the Cowichan Valley and Victoria.

At this time we cannot be certain as to the extent of any job action and its impacts on transit services. However, the job action has the potential to disrupt transit services and our customers’ ability to use the public transit services.

BC Transit and the Cowichan Valley Regional District will communicate if there are any service issues as we become aware of them. Due to the potential job action, BC Transit recommends that customers who use public transit should make alternative arrangements for their transportation in the event of any service disruptions that may occur.

This potential job action does not affect handyDART services in the Regional District, nor does it apply to local service in the Lake Cowichan area (Routes 20 and 21). However, Route 7 connections between Lake Cowichan and Duncan are subject to potential service disruption.

In the event of a work stoppage, information on monthly pass refunds will be available at www.cvrd.bc.ca

BC Transit is closely monitoring the situation and trusts the parties will find resolution without disruption to transit services. BC Transit apologizes to our valued customers for any inconvenience this matter may cause.
