Starting this summer, BC Transit will begin replacing medium-duty buses with newer model light-duty buses for the Port Alberni Transit System.
BC Transit is introducing light-duty buses following a comprehensive fleet and ridership review. This fleet renewal will improve vehicle availability, provide better access to replacement parts, and reduce maintenance-related disruptions.
By this fall, the Port Alberni Transit System will operate entirely with light-duty buses, replacing its five aging medium-duty buses. BC Transit will continue to monitor ridership following the introduction of the new fleet to ensure reliable transit service for customers.
The newer model light-duty buses are designed to provide a comfortable and accessible transit experience, offering seating for up to 18 passengers and dedicated spaces for up to two wheelchairs. The buses include a range of features, such as:
- White LED destination signs that clearly display the route name and destination;
- Modern vinyl seating that is easy to clean and resists dirt and contaminants;
- Interior lighting designed to increase safety for boarding and exiting passengers;
- Umo fare payment technology for faster, more convenient pay options and trip-planning tools;
- BC Transit’s NextRide system for real-time bus locations and onboard audio stop announcements;
- Digital screens that display information like upcoming stops, current route, service alerts;
- Bike racks to accommodate two bikes with tires up to 3 inches wide during daylight hours; and
- Seatbelts as well as two built-in child booster seats.
All light-duty buses are equipped with three-point seatbelts at every seat. Under the BC Motor Vehicle Act, all passengers are required to wear a seatbelt whenever one is provided while the vehicle is in operation. Passengers are encouraged to fasten their seatbelt after taking a seat and keep it securely fastened until the bus comes to a complete stop. Additionally, each light-duty bus is equipped with two integrated child seats with five-point harnesses, providing safe and convenient seating options for young children.
