New Abbotsford and Mission transit maintenance and operations facility update

Abbotsford – BC Transit invites residents of Abbotsford to a public open house about the proposed Central Fraser Valley Maintenance and Operations Facility. The open house will provide information about the rezoning, development permit and streamside protection variance applications for the property on Gladys Avenue, just south of Pratt Road in Abbotsford, B.C.

The existing transit operations and maintenance facility is located at 1225 Riverside Road and cannot meet the growing needs of the community. It is constrained by limited space for bus storage and maintenance, and it does not have compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling capability or an automated bus wash facility. From 2000 to 2017, Central Fraser Valley transit ridership has grown by 1.3 million passengers. However, there has been limited ability to expand transit service, in part because this existing facility has reached its capacity.

The facility has been designed for the storage and maintenance of approximately 100 buses (with the capacity to expand to 150 to meet future growth). It includes a CNG fueling station, an automated bus wash, seven maintenance bays and administrative offices. In the new location, BC Transit will be better positioned to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of transit services for Central Fraser Valley transit users by locating closer to local routes, which will reduce fuel requirements. With CNG fueling, the new facility will also accommodate CNG buses, which are quieter, cleaner-burning and more cost-efficient than diesel buses.

The $28 million project is part of the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund. Costs will be shared between the Government of Canada, the Province of B.C., and the local governments of the City of Abbotsford and District of Mission.
