Motorists Urged To Plan Ahead As Victoria Street West Paving Proceeds October 11

Kamloops, BC – On Friday, October 11, crews will be paving three lanes (two eastbound and one westbound) on Victoria Street West from The Mustard Seed to Boomers Automotive. Motorists should expect significant delays and may want to consider taking alternate routes that day.

Transit users should also expect significant delays. Routes 1 – Tranquille, 2 – Parkcrest, and 3 – Westsyde will be directly impacted. Due to the interconnections within the Kamloops Transit System, delays will be felt on all routes at various times during the day. Transit users are encouraged to plan accordingly.

“The City and Extreme Excavating appreciate the patience of motorists, transit users, and pedestrians as well as the businesses and residents along the Victoria Street West corridor,” said Darren Crundwell, City of Kamloops Capital Projects Manager. “The project is on schedule to have all lanes of traffic paved and open and pedestrian access restored throughout the corridor by the end of 2019, as long as weather conditions remain favourable. In spring/summer 2020, landscaping work will continue, hydro poles will be removed, the remaining sidewalk panels will be installed, and any additional remaining work will be completed.”

As more of the Victoria Street West corridor becomes paved, motorists are reminded that the 30 km/hr speed limit applies throughout the entire construction zone, which extends westbound from Lansdowne Street at 2nd Avenue to the Overlanders Bridge and eastbound from the Overlanders Bridge to Seymour Street West across from the BCLC upper parking lot access.

With approximately 30,000 vehicles currently travelling through the Victoria Street West corridor every day, safety remains a huge concern for construction workers, flaggers, and pedestrians. The RCMP will be paying close attention to the speed of vehicles travelling through the construction area. Fines for speeding in a work zone start at $196.
