VICTORIA – BC Transit is gearing up for another busy season in Greater Victoria as summer holidays come to an end and our customers return to work and school. As of September 4, 2012 an extra 5,000 service hours will be added to better serve University of Victoria students, Camosun College students and other transit customers who have been impacted by high demand and crowded buses.
The Victoria Regional Transit Commission voted to reinstate the 7,000 service hours that were cut last year. 2,000 hours will be used to offer extra handyDART runs. The remaining 5,000 hours will be targeted on the capitals most populated routes #4 UVic/Hillside, #11 UVic/Tillicum, #14 Vic General/UVIC via Richmond, #21 Interurban, #25 Maplewood/Admirals Walk and #26 Dockyard/UVic.
Not only will there be extra runs Monday through Friday, there will also be overload buses in strategic locations to respond mid-run when buses are at capacity.
The Commission has listened to both the community and a number of delegations who asked for increased transit service at peak times and on over-capacity routes, said Victoria Regional Transit Commission Chair Susan Brice. BC Transit has to be convenient and reliable; and the restored service hours will make the system more attractive to frequent users.
We are committed to providing an efficient and effective transit system, said BC Transit President & CEO Manuel Achadinha. Our efforts cannot eliminate pass ups entirely, but they will go a long way to address the high demand for transit service during the peak fall season. We ask our customers to be patient as our operations team makes the best possible use of our resources.
