KAMLOOPS – More buses and service hours are coming to BC Transit
in Kamloops. As of September 2, 2012, conventional bus service will increase
by 5500 hours and handyDART service will grow by 2000 hours. Those service hour
increases come with two more 40 foot buses and an additional custom transit
vehicle.
The added conventional transit hours will be used to improve Monday through
Saturday evening service and all day Sunday with greater frequency and longer
hours on routes #1 Tranquille, #2 Parkcrest and #9 Gleneagles. Plus more daily
trips have been included on routes #10 TRU/North Shore Express, #14 Batchelor
and #16 Juniper Ridge.
The extra handyDART hours will see service expanded from the current last trip
at 8 pm to a final run at 10 pm Monday through Saturday.
Kamloops continues to be one of BC Transit’s most successful systems.
More than 3.6 million people took transit in 2011/12, that’s a 4% increase
over last year.
“I have always supported more transit service for Kamloops,” said
Kamloops-North Thompson MLA and Minister of Environment Terry Lake. “Increasing
service will encourage more people to choose transit over driving vehicles.
Transit plays an important role in our communities by reducing greenhouse gas
emissions, which helps our communities become more sustainable.”
“Kamloops’ transit system has consistently seen increased ridership
year over year. The added transit hours will continue to build up on that growth
and make transit more accessible, which will encourage even more residents to
take the bus,” said Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar.
“BC Transit customers in Kamloops can look forward to an efficient and
effective system that is driven by their long-term and sustained commitment
to public transportation,” said BC Transit President & CEO Manuel Achadinha.
