Transit System: Mount Waddington
MOUNT WADDINGTON – Five years and growing stronger! BC Transit
and the Regional District of Mount Waddington are celebrating an exciting milestone
today. On July 2, 2008 transit services were first introduced in Mount Waddington.
The service has grown from a small operation with vehicles funded by the Vancouver
Island Health Authority to its current level of three community shuttles, six
conventional routes, two handyDART services (Port McNeill and Port Hardy) and
one seasonal ski bus route.
The 5th anniversary celebrations will include the screening of a student film
on regional transit service, an art gallery of transit-related drawings by school
students and treats for customers at the Gate House Theatre.
There are many reasons, beyond the 5th anniversary, to celebrate transit in
Mount Waddington in 2013. Annual ridership on the Mount Waddington system grew
by 7.1% when comparing 2012/13 to 2011/12. April 2013 saw record-breaking trips
on transit; from the average 2,500 customers a month to more than 2,900 this
past spring.
“This 5-year anniversary celebrates both transit and community,”
said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “Mt Waddington’s
transit service is a tribute to a strong relationship between BC Transit and
local government. The student’s transit documentary is further proof of
Mt. Waddington’s dedication to transit and its users.”
“Congratulations to our partners in the Regional District of Mount Waddington
on five successful years,” said BC Transit Vice President and CIO Brian
Anderson. “We are excited about the future, as we continue to look for
efficient and effective ways of growing the transit system and better serving
our customers.”
