Free Rides on First Day of New Service

WEST KOOTENAY – The West Kootenay Transit Committee has voted in favour of free rides for all BC Transit customers on July 2, 2013. That date marks the official launch of the integrated regional system with a single Rider’s Guide that covers transit from Nakusp to Rossland and from Kaslo to Fruitvale.

The West Kootenay Transit Committee was formed in June 2012, bringing three local governments and nine transit systems together. After a great deal of planning and preparation, the regional approach to managing transit will be implemented on July 2, 2013.

BC Transit customers will have enhanced connections and a simple fare structure for either local or all zone service. Local cash rides will be $2. All zones cash fares will be $3.50. The previous fragmented service meant some trips required complicated and varying top-up fares.

“Creating a regional transit system will encourage ridership, save money and make it easier for commuters and families to travel between communities,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone. “This new system demonstrates BC Transit’s commitment to working with local governments to develop a sustainable regional transit system.”

“Free BC Transit rides on July 2, 2013 are a great opportunity for people to experience everything public transit has to offer in our area,” said West Kootenay Transit Committee Chair and Castlegar Mayor Lawrence Chernoff. “I encourage all residents to take advantage of this opportunity to explore the new transit system in the region.”

“Together with our partners, the West Kootenay Transit Committee, we are pleased to launch the integrated regional transit system,” said BC Transit President and CEO Manuel Achadinha. “The Committee has been recognized by UBCM and by BC Transit for its forward-thinking approach to regional transit. Congratulations to the Committee and to our customers who will benefit from the new system.”
