KAMLOOPS – Feel free to let BC Transit operators take care of your
driving worries on Canada Day. BC Transit and the City of Kamloops are encouraging
everyone to enjoy a safe and happy holiday by taking a free ride on July
1, 2013.
Kamloops Transit will run a Saturday schedule on the statutory holiday, plus
there will be a free shuttle running between the Lansdowne Village transit exchange
and Riverside Park.
Riverside Park is putting on a patriotic party from 7 am with a pancake breakfast
until 10 pm when the fireworks show brings the Canada Day festivities to an
end.
Take BC Transit up on the free ride whether you are joining the thousands
of participants at Riverside Park, or simply sharing Canada’s 146th birthday
with family and close friends.
“Free bus rides are a great way to encourage residents to get out to Canada
Day celebrations and enjoy them safely,” said Transportation and Infrastructure
Minister Todd Stone. “I’d like to thank BC Transit for making this special
day more accessible to local residents.”
“This free, convenient service is great for the environment,” said
Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Terry Lake. “I encourage people to leave their
cars at home and make this holiday of ‘red and white’ a little more
green.”
“Providing free transit on Canada Day is yet another way to help boost
transit ridership in Kamloops, by introducing transit to residents who may not
otherwise ride the bus,” said Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar. “As added
bonuses, the free ride lessens congestion in the downtown area, and reduces
overall greenhouse gas emissions, which are all objectives laid out by our Sustainable
Kamloops Plan.”
“Make transit part of your Canada Day celebrations,” said BC Transit
President and CEO Manuel Achadinha. “The free rides are a terrific incentive
for both our loyal customers and new-comers to enjoy the many benefits of public
transportation.”
