Free Fares on July 2 to Celebrate 20 Years of handyDART

KITIMAT – Enjoy a day of free transit on Thursday, July 2, 2015 as Kitimat celebrates the 20th anniversary of its handyDART transit service (also known as TaxiDART).

“This is a significant milestone that deserves recognition,” said Kitimat Mayor Phil Germuth. “We take pride in our community being accessible for all and handyDART service has been a great complement to our conventional transit services.”

To celebrate, BC Transit and the District of Kitimat will offer free fares on July 2 for both conventional and handyDART service. This is the second important public transit milestone in Kitimat in the past year. In April 2014, the conventional transit service marked its 40th year of providing service to the community.

“We are very proud to recognize this major achievement and celebrate our partnership with the District of Kitimat in providing outstanding transit service,” said Manuel Achadinha, President and CEO of BC Transit. “For 20 years, the handyDART service in Kitimat has supported more people in connecting with their community.”

“The handyDART services are a key component in helping seniors and disabled persons to stay active, involved and engaged in their communities,” said Fay Roberts with Northern Health’s Home & Community Care Program. “These services are essential.”

“As the provider of the handyDART service in Kitimat, it has given me much satisfaction to feel the mutual appreciation of the handyDART drivers and our customers,” said Jim Gristwood, owner of Kitimat MiniBus Ltd., the contracted operator of the service. “Our customers have become a part of our extended family.”

A survey of Kitimat handyDART customers in the spring of 2014 indicated that 83 per cent of passengers who responded were either very satisfied or satisfied with the service. Some of the highest marks from customers were for driver courtesy, booking a trip and the cleanliness of vehicles.
