QUESNEL – A pilot of expanded evening and Saturday bus service will be coming to two routes in Quesnel starting on March 13, 2017. The trial service will last until April 29, 2017, and will be used to gauge the popularity of additional trips in the city.
“Providing transportation options that work for all British Columbians is a core commitment for our government,” said MLA for Cariboo North Coralee Oakes. “Through this announcement, we are working to improve the Quesnel transit system so that it is useful to more residents than ever before.”
“Providing accessible public transportation that works for all Quesnel residents is one of our top priorities,” said Mayor of Quesnel, Bob Simpson. “This pilot project is the result of an extensive process undertaken by BC Transit and the City. We look forward to seeing the results.”
In total, seven additional trips will be piloted:
• Three additional evening trips on Route 1 West Quesnel.
• Three additional evening trips on Route 2 Red Bluff.
• One additional Saturday morning trip on Route 1 West Quesnel.
“Providing accessible public transportation that works for all Quesnel residents is one of our top priorities,” said Mayor of Quesnel, Bob Simpson. “We look forward to assessing the effectiveness of this expanded service once the pilot project has completed.”
The introduction of a service pilot is the result of feedback from people across Quesnel, including students from the College of New Caledonia and University of Northern BC. Should the service prove popular, both the City of Quesnel and BC Transit will examine options for potential permanent expansion moving forward, within available resources.
“In delivering on our mission of connecting people and communities, we are constantly looking at how we can improve service to make it more convenient,” said Manuel Achadinha, BC Transit President and Chief Executive Officer. “Having heard customer feedback in Quesnel, we are now introducing this pilot service, which will have the largest benefit for the region’s post-secondary students.”
The Quesnel Transit System officially began operation in 1982. Today, the system boasts a fleet of seven buses and provides approximately 85,000 rides per year.
