Nelson – Electric bus infrastructure construction is getting underway at the Nelson Works Yard.
Nelson will receive two heavy-duty electric buses after construction is completed this coming fall. Work to prepare the site to receive new electric buses includes:
- infrastructure for two charging stations;
- power distribution equipment; and
- site works to support equipment installations.
The public will not be impacted by construction, and no traffic disruptions are expected. Customers can expect bus service to continue as scheduled.
In total, 125 electric buses will be delivered to eight BC Transit systems by the end of 2027, including Kamloops, Kelowna, Nanaimo, Powell River, Sunshine Coast, Whistler, Greater Victoria and Nelson. More than 30 electric buses are currently in service in Greater Victoria and Kelowna.
BC Transit electrification projects are funded through the Zero Emission Transit Fund and the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. Investments total more than $424 million and are jointly funded by the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia and with contributions from local government partners.
