Corporate – On Sunday, April 22, people around the world will celebrate Earth Day, and BC Transit encourages everyone to join in the celebration by leaving their cars at home and taking the bus to their destinations.
On Earth Day, more than one billion people in 192 countries celebrate the birth of the modern environmental movement. The event shines a spotlight on the importance of sustainability and encourages people to make choices that will help protect our environment.
Choosing transit instead of driving is one easy way to take action. It not only helps to ease traffic congestion, but also decreases greenhouse emissions by reducing the number of vehicles on the road-a single, full city bus takes 40 individual vehicles off the road. This can save over 25 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in one year.
BC Transit owns and operates a fleet of over 1,000 buses in more than 130 communities across the province, connecting 1.5 million people to their destinations every year. Since 2007, BC Transit’s diesel buses use a renewable biodiesel blended with ultra-low sulphur diesel-a sustainable innovation that earned recognition by the Standards Council of Canada.
To date, three transit systems in the province (Nanaimo, Kamloops and Whistler) have converted their entire fleets to buses powered by compressed natural gas, a lower-emission alternative to diesel.
To help support other sustainable transportation options, all BC Transit buses are equipped with bike racks in the front.
