On Wednesday, September 16th, Chief Constable Frank Elsner of the Victoria Police Department recognized BC Transit mechanic Bill Naylor for his calm and professional demeanour while rendering life-saving aid when responding to a serious vehicle collision.

Bill, who is also a volunteer firefighter with the Colwood Fire Department, came across a serious single vehicle collision after leaving from work on July 3, 2015. Although early in the morning and just finishing his shift, Bill immediately went to the vehicle and saw that the driver had no vital signs and the three passengers were suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Despite the potential risks to his own safety, as the vehicle was leaking fluids after the collision with the cement power pole, Bill continued and assisted the severely injured passengers while reporting his observations to VicPD’s 911 operators.

Even after local emergency crews arrived on scene, Bill remained to assist with the extraction of the injured passengers.

His actions were noted by VicPD Acting Sergeant Mike Darling, who nominated Bill for the award.

“We are extremely proud of Bill’s actions while responding to this critical incident,” said Manuel Achadinha, President and CEO of BC Transit. “Bill exemplifies the values of BC Transit through his work, his volunteerism, and his continuous service to the community.”

The VicPD Civic Service Award was created as a way to recognize community members and officers who have stepped up and done the right thing in challenging situations.

The ceremony on September 16th was attended by members of the public, media, family and a contingent of BC Transit employees including Aaron Lamb, Executive Director of Asset Management Division.
