BC Transit is the First Crown to Achieve WorkSafeBC Recognition

VICTORIA – On March 21, 2012 BC Municipal Safety Association and WorkSafeBC presents BC Transit with their coveted Certificate of Recognition (COR). COR recognizes and rewards companies that go the extra mile beyond the legal requirements of the Workers Compensation Act and Occupational Health Regulation by taking a best practices approach to implementing health, safety and return-to-work management systems. BC Transit is thrilled to be the province’s first Crown Corporation to earn this distinction.

In order to achieve COR 50 BC Transit employees from all sectors of our corporation were asked to participate in an external audit. BC Transit was delighted to learn our Transit Safety Management program scored 96% and our Return to Work program 90% by this external auditor.

The COR designation comes with a significant financial incentive. Assuming all COR program criteria continue to be met, BC Transit could be eligible for approximately $150,000 a year in incentives from WorkSafeBC for the next three years.

“We are proud of BC Transit’s safety record and the efforts of their staff to not only provide a convenient service, but a safe way for riders to arrive at their destination, “ says Oak BayGordon Head MLA Ida Chong.

“Safety is our number one value at BC Transit,” says BC Transit President and CEO Manuel Achadinha. “Earning COR from WorkSafeBC sends a ringing endorsement to our employees and customers that we are meeting and exceeding safety standards.”

“A strong workplace health and safety policy is key to protecting workers,” says WorkSafeBC director of Industry and Labour Services Dale Walker, “BC Transit has demonstrated a significant commitment to safety by earning the COR designation.”
