VICTORIA – In 2011/12, BC Transit established another new ridership record. Ridership increased 0.7% from the previous year to 51.6 million trips throughout the province. As stated in BC Transit’s Annual Report, a number of communities experienced significant growth in ridership:

As of March 31, 2012, BC Transit served over 1.5 million British Columbians at a cost of $262 million. This ridership was supported by a fleet of 1,001 BC Transit vehicles, the 19th largest fleet in North America.

“We are very pleased with the results achieved in 2011/12.” said Kevin Mahoney, Chair of the BC Transit Board of Directors. “In 2012/13, we will build on the proactive steps we have already taken to increase ridership, revenue and system-wide performance levels.”

In 2011/12, BC Transit celebrated a number of milestones, including a 40 year operating anniversary in Port Alberni, 35 years in Penticton and 30 years of service in the conventional systems of Campbell River, Dawson Creek, Kimberley and Williams Lake and handyDART services in Cranbrook, Vernon, Kamloops, Prince George and Sunshine Coast.

2011/12 Major Accomplishments

  • First Crown Corporation in the province to achieve the WorkSafe BC Certificate of Recognition
  • Construction of key transit infrastructure projects, including Victoria’s McTavish exchange and park & ride, a new exchange in downtown Vernon, and operating and maintenance facilities in Vernon and Kamloops
  • Completion of Transit Future Plans in the Victoria Region, Campbell River, the Cowichan Valley and Kamloops
  • Launched the award-winning “Transit Hero – Tell Your Story” campaign and online Marketing Resource Centre to help BC Transit spread its message and attract new customers
