VICTORIA – On October 1, the Victoria Regional Transit Commission started the process of reviewing the fare structure for the system, and has now heard from over 2,000 people who have taken the online survey; others have offered their insights through emails, phone calls, social media and letters.
The Victoria Regional Transit System is funded through fares, local property taxes, Provincial Government grants and fuel taxes. The Commission is responsible for setting fares and property tax levy for transit in the region. The Province determines the size of the operating grant and approves fuel tax rates.
The Victoria Regional Transit System is a significant contributor to efficient and environmentally-friendly travel choices within the region, carrying between 80,000 to 100,000 passenger trips per day and moving thousands of people along corridors throughout of the region.
It is important to hear from as many people as possible as all the responses are being reviewed and the input will help shape the fare structure for the next three years.
“We want to hear from transit users, members of the public and taxpayers,” said Susan Brice, Chair of the Victoria Regional Transit Commission. “We are all partners in public transit and we all have a voice.”
