SMITHERS – The town of Smithers is celebrating a quarter century of transit on May 15th with a bus roadeo, cookies and free bus rides.
Transit service began in Smithers with a single converted van in 1991. Now, a bus runs between Smithers and Telkwa five times on weekdays (six times Tuesday through Thursday) and four times on Saturdays.
“Smithers and District Transit is a successful partnership that has delivered an important service to local residents for 25 years,” said Mayor Taylor Bachrach. “I’d like to congratulate all of our partners on reaching this significant milestone”
“Transit ridership in the Smithers area has more than doubled in 25 years,” adds BC Transit Vice President of Operations, Brian Anderson. “The community clearly embraces the value of public transit and we are privileged to help mark this important milestone.”
To say “Thank you!” to customers, all bus riders will receive cookies on Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14, and all trips will be free on the Saturday.
Sunday, May 15, will feature a “Bus Roadeo”, in which some non-professional drivers — invited guests from public life and the media – tackle an obstacle course in one of the buses. The roadeo starts at noon in the Roi Theatre parking lot, with a cake-cutting ceremony to follow.
