Nanaimo Introduces Transit Network and Service Changes

NANAIMO– The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) and BC Transit are pleased to introduce a new and expanded Frequent Transit Network starting September 6, 2015.
The new Route 40 VIU Express Frequent Transit Network will provide direct service connecting downtown, Vancouver Island University, Country Club, Nanaimo North Town Centre and Woodgrove. This new high-frequency route offers two-way service on major corridors during peak times.
“In our updated Rider’s Guide, effective September 6, you’ll see Route 40 highlighted as a Frequent Route – it’s the first of its kind in our system,†said RDN Chair Joe Stanhope. “Frequent Routes get service at each stop every 15-30 minutes to help riders keep moving in busy areas. This is part of our plan to deliver fast, effective transportation, while helping reduce congestion and carbon emissions.â€

There will also be service changes to Route 88 Parksville that will see it as an independent route, continuing service to key destinations within Parksville. The Route 25 Ferry Shuttle will service the Downtown Prideaux Exchange to the Departure Bay Ferry Terminal, Thursday through Monday.
Due to low ridership, and to help facilitate the new services, two routes will be eliminated. The Route 12 Dover and Route 93 Mountain View will no longer run. However, services in these locations are still available on other routes operating nearby.
BC Transit is also debuting new Transit Network Maps and on-street information in the Rider’s Guides for the RDN. The new maps, and on-street information, help identify services by levels of frequency. These maps will offer clear, easy to understand directions, transit connections and information.
There are several routes that will be re-numbered to make it easier for new riders to learn and navigate the Regional District of Nanaimo transit system. Routes ending in “0†will be North-South, while single-digit routes will be local routes.
