Electric Bus Projects

BC Transit has 125 heavy-duty electric buses on order with New Flyer and Nova Bus. Kamloops, Kelowna, Nanaimo, Nelson, Powell River, Sunshine Coast, Victoria and Whistler are all planned to receive new electric buses and charging infrastructure. Close to 80 electric buses are expected to enter service in regional transit systems by the end of 2026.

A total of 62 electric buses are currently planned for the Victoria Regional Transit System.

How long can an electric bus run on one charge? 

Electric buses have a driving distance of about 250 km to 400 km depending on various conditions.  

How long does it take to charge an electric bus? 

Electric buses charge overnight for about five to six hours. Once charged, the buses have the capacity to complete routes for the day.

How are electric bus projects funded?

Funding for BC Transit’s first 10 electric buses was announced in July 2019. The project was made possible thanks to joint funding of $28.6 million delivered through the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, with contributions from the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, and the Victoria Regional Transit Commission.

Further funding of $395.5 million for BC Transit electric buses and infrastructure was announced in July 2023, supported in part by the Zero Emission Transit Fund and the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
