Electric bus infrastructure construction starts in late November at BC Transit’s Whistler Transit Centre on Nesters Road.
Whistler is currently scheduled to receive 15 heavy-duty electric buses after construction is complete in fall of 2026. Work to prepare the site to receive new electric buses includes:
- infrastructure for 16 charging stations;
- power distribution equipment;
- upgrades to the bus maintenance facility; and
- site works to support equipment installations.
The public will not be impacted by construction, and no traffic disruptions are expected. Customers can expect bus service to continue as scheduled.
Eight BC Transit systems are lined up for electrification projects, including Kamloops, Kelowna, Nanaimo, Nelson, Powell River, Sunshine Coast, Victoria and Whistler. BC Transit has 125 heavy-duty electric buses on order and in production with Nova Bus and New Flyer. Ten electric buses are currently in service in Victoria.
Electric bus infrastructure in Whistler is part of BC Transit’s Battery Electric Bus Facility Upgrades. This bundle of projects includes electrification infrastructure construction projects in Whistler, Victoria, and Nelson. These projects are made possible thanks to joint funding totalling $50.2 million from the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia, through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
Funding of $395.5 million for BC Transit electric buses and infrastructure was announced in July 2023, supported in part by the Zero Emission Transit Fund and the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
