Downtown Comox transit exchange starts construction next week

The Comox Valley Regional District andBC Transit will be starting construction of a new transit exchange in downtown Comox the week of September 22. The new exchange is located on Port Augusta Street at Comox Avenue. Construction is expected to be completed this winter. The contract has been awarded to Wacor Holdings Ltd from Campbell River.

Project Timeline:

  • Construction begins – week of September 22
  • Temporary relocation of existing bus stops – week of September 22
  • Site clearing and setup of safety barriers – late September
  • Completion of major construction and the new exchange in-service – Winter 2026

As construction gets underway, some impacts to traffic, parking and pedestrian access, as well as temporary changes to bus stop locations will occur. The anticipated changes include:

  • A full closure to all pedestrian and public traffic along Port Augusta Street during the construction period.  During this closure, pedestrian access to the area will be maintained along Comox Avenue
  • Full access to street-level businesses along Comox Avenue and Port Augusta Street will be maintained, with signage and pedestrian detours posted for information
  • Access to Comox Mall will remain open for tenants and customers and;
  • Access to and from the Comox Mall loading dock will be maintained for delivery trucks throughout construction

Temporary bus stops will be in place during construction at Beaufort Avenue at Wilcox Street for route 3 and Comox Avenue for routes 1 & 4.  Customers should look for signage and check for customer alerts that will advise of any changes or delays to routes.

These new transit exchanges will improve transit access, customer comfort, safety, and support continued investment in frequent transit service.

Once completed, the project will enhance customer experience as well as service operations while facilitating service increases and ridership growth.
