Transit System: Salt Spring Island
BC Transit and the Capital Regional District (CRD) are inviting BC Transit passengers and the public to share feedback on proposed fare changes. Engagement runs from today until January 25, 2026.
This fare review will assess current prices and products to ensure that they strike the right balance between affordability, ridership growth, and cost recovery.
Join us at an open house:
Friday, January 23, 2026
12:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Rainbow Recreation Centre, 262 Rainbow Road
The open house is an opportunity to share your thoughts on the proposed fare options, outlined below. If you are unable to attend, an online survey is available at engage.bctransit.com/ssi-fare-review.
BC Transit and the CRD have developed three fare change options for consideration to help maintain and improve transit service:
- Option 1: Gradual increase to align with inflation. This will see the fares increase from the current price of $2.25 to $3.00 by 2028 and monthly passes increasing by $5.00 every year.
- Option 2: Immediate increase to align with inflation. This option will see the fares jump to $3.00 immediately to align with inflation. This would also cause the monthly passes to increase by $15.00 and generate the greatest revenue for the transit system.
- Option 3: Moderate increase to $2.75, with lower monthly pass costs to support regular riders.
Feedback from the open house and the survey will be taken into consideration when the Salt Spring Island Local Community Commission considers the fare change options in February.
This will mark the first fare increase for Salt Spring Island since 2012, when the Single Ride fare increased to $2.25.
