FAQ - Tap to Pay by Debit, Credit and Mobile Wallet

Riders will be able to pay with debit, credit, and mobile wallets, including Interac, Visa, American Express and Mastercard.

Cards linked to Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay mobile wallets can also be used.

Riders can tap their preferred payment method on the same digital readers already mounted on buses that are used for Umo card and app payments.

Yes. Tapping to pay for transit is secure, just like when you tap your card or mobile wallet for everyday purchases.

The reader will display a checkmark on the response screen and produce a single audible beep informing you that your fare has been accepted.

When you pay with contactless, make sure you tap only a card or device against the reader.

If more than one card or device is tapped at the same time, the reader will charge the first one it detects. This can sometimes result in more than one charge.

To avoid this card clash:

  • Take your card out of your wallet before you tap, or
  • If you’re using your phone, separate it from any attached card holders or wallets, and
  • Tap once and wait for confirmation before finding a seat on the bus

No. Please only tap your preferred payment method once upon boarding the bus.

Contactless payments charge the single-ride fare in the rider’s transit system.

The single-ride fare is posted on the farebox, BCTransit.com and is displayed on the reader screen after the riders taps their payment method.

In transit systems that offer a transfer, riders’ debit and credit cards will be automatically issued a digital transfer as they pay. Then, they can tap their card on a second bus to ride again without being charged.

A digital transfer is valid for 90 minutes from their original trip’s departure and good for one use.

Digital transfers are available in Pemberton Local Route 100.

Contactless payments automatically give our riders fare privileges available in their transit system, such as a fare capped DayPASS.

In transit systems that offer the fare capped DayPASS, a riders’ payment method will automatically be recognized as a digital dayPASS after their second payment of the day. Then, they can continue to tap that same payment method on every other bus they travel on for the remainder of the service day without being charged again.

A fare capped DayPass is available in the Whistler Transit system.

If paying by contactless debit, credit or mobile wallet, all riders are required to carry their own payment method. This includes individuals riding as a group.

Single fare charges will appear directly on your bank or credit card statement, just like any everyday purchase you make.

Riders may also see a temporary preauthorization while their payment is being processed. This is like the bank saving a spot for the fare amount while the payment goes through. Once the payment is finished, the hold goes away.

Settlement timeframes vary by card brand and a charge may not settle on the day the service is delivered.

Your card or phone should be held within a few centimeters of the contactless symbol on the digital reader.

The digital reader will validate your card or mobile wallet while you are holding it.

No, BC Transit and our fare vendors will not pass along payment processing fees.
