Victoria's Future
The Victoria Region is changing. Help us plan our future.
- Population and traffic growth in the Capital Region means we need to shift our focus from moving cars to moving people
- To avoid the high economic, environmental and social costs of congestion and road expansion, we must move people more efficiently
- Transportation should take us where we want to go, when we want to go there
What is a Transit Future Plan?
The Transit Future envisions what a communitys public transportation network should look like 25 years from now and describes what priorities, infrastructure and investment are needed to get there.
The Transit Future analyzes the existing transit system to see how it could be improved, evaluates how it fits with future local municipal land use plans, and looks at future trends.
It creates a transit network based on layers of different types of service and seeks to create a more formal link between higher density land use and the level of transit investment.
Why do we need a Transit Future Plan?
The Transit Future is a plan to guide future transit investments in a community. Investments in transit will be made to support the livability of communities:
- Offering more transportation choice
- Supporting smart land use plans that focus on walking, cycling and transit
- Meeting climate change goals
- Making it easy to access everyday services on foot, by bike and by transit.
The Provincial Transit Plan outlines a new strategy to:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air contaminants from cars by 4.7 million tonnes by 2020
- Double transit ridership in B.C. to over 400 million trips a year by 2020
- Increase transit market share in Victoria region from 7% to 9.5% in 2020 and 12% in 2030 - this means increasing Victoria region transit ridership from 24 million in 2009/2010 to 47 million passengers a year by 2030

What BC
Transit wants to do:
Encourage more British Columbians to take transit,
walk or cycle. These transportation options help reduce vehicles on roads and
environmental impacts.
