Creating Cowichan Valley's Transit Future takes a look at how transit works today, and creates a vision of what transit could look like 25 years from now. Transit Future will also lay out the steps to help create more livable communities and a more sustainable future in Ladysmith, South Shawnigan Lake and all other communities in the regional district.

Cowichan Valley Transit Future Plan

The completed Cowichan Valley Transit Future Plan report will be presented to the CVRD Transit Committee on March 14, 2012 for final endorsement.

October 13, 2011

The Cowichan Valley Transit Future Plan was presented to the CVRD Transit Committee on October 12, 2011. The Transit Committee endorsed the key components of the plan, including the Vision, Goals, Transit Network and Implementation Strategy. The Vision, Goals and Network were also endorsed by the municipal councils of the Town of Lake Cowichan, Town of Ladysmith, District of North Cowichan and City of Duncan.

The complete Transit Future Plan report will be presented to the CVRD Transit Committee in early 2012 for final endorsement.

September 19, 2011: Here’s what we Heard from You!

From September 9 to 12, the Transit Future bus visited four locations in the Cowichan Valley including the Mill Bay Shopping Centre, Canada Ave in Duncan, Aggie Hall in Ladysmith and the Country Grocer in Town of Lake Cowichan last weekend. Thanks to the more than 460 of you visited the bus and gave us your comments.

Here are some of the major themes from the online survey and comment board:

  • Enhancements to the Cowichan Valley Commuter service (more rush hour trips and mid-day service)
  • Providing connections between local and commuter services
  • Improving evening and early morning local transit services
  • Improvements to frequency of local services
  • Increasing frequency of weekend service
  • Introducing transit service to Nanaimo

At our 4th stakeholders meeting we reviewed the draft Transit Future Network, set ridership targets and discussed strategies to implement the Transit Future Plan. Have a look the minutes and presentation.

Next steps: BC Transit will make presentations to local municipal councils in September. And look for the Transit Future bus in September too! More information coming soon…

Working with our local partners and Stakeholder Advisory Group, we are now designing a long term transit network for the Cowichan Valley. In May, you’ll be able to view the new network and tell us what you think.

Phase 1 of the public consultation is now complete! Thank you for your valuable contributions:

  • 330 people attended open houses
  • 286 surveys completed

Phase 2 consultations will be held in May – you’ll be able to comment on the vision, goals and network options.

Thanks for the great feedback in our first round of open houses! We had a total of 330 people visit the Transit Future bus. Our next step is to take all your input and develop a vision and implementation plan for the future of transit in the Cowichan Valley. The next round of consultation is planned for mid May. And don’t forget, you can still take the survey until February 13.

This weekend more than 130 people visited the Transit Future bus and told us their thoughts on how to improve transit in the Cowichan Valley. The bus made stops at the Mill Bay Shopping Centre, Kerry Park Recreation Centre, Cobble Hill Market and the Island Savings Centre during a Capitals game. It was a great kick-off to our Transit Future public consultation.
