How to use Your Transit System

Fares

You may pay with cash (exact coin fare only, drivers carry no change), ticket or one of the types of pass available in your community, including BC Bus Pass and CNIB Pass, where available.

Transfers

Visit the fares page for transfer instructions and policies.

Boarding the Bus

  • You may board only at designated stops, via the front door of the bus
  • Have your fare ready when you board the bus, and display your entire Monthly or DayPASS to the driver.

Appropriate Attire

  • For safety reasons, drivers will refuse service to passengers not wearing shirts and footwear.
  • The bus is a great way to get to and from the beach, lake or pool, but please make sure your clothes are dry when boarding.

Priority Seating

Although BC Transit serves everyone on a first-to-board basis, priority seating is considered to be the front accessible area of the bus. Priority seating meets the needs of all transit customers, and is especially vital to:

  1. customers who use scooters, wheelchairs, pediatric strollers or other mobility aids,
  2. customers with a disability or mobility issue, and
  3. customers with baby strollers.

Please be courteous.

On the Bus

  • Please remain seated or hold onto one of the stanchions when the bus is in motion. Do not put your arms or elbows out of the window.
  • You may not carry combustible materials such as wet-cell batteries or gasoline containers on the bus.
  • To request a stop, pull the bell cord, being sure to allow the driver enough time to stop safely.

Getting off the Bus

  • Exit by the rear door when possible.
  • After leaving the bus, wait until the bus pulls away and you have a clear view of any on-coming traffic before crossing the street.

Baby Strollers

As a parent or guardian you must hold onto the stroller at all times. Position the stroller with the brakes set. Keep your stroller clear of the aisles. The aisle is the width of the distance between the normal seats, not the width of the accessible area.

Strollers should be collapsible. When wheelchair positions are occupied or required by another passenger using a wheelchair or scooter, you may fold the stroller and move to another available seat, storing the stroller between the seats.

Pets

Please follow these guidelines when bringing your pet on board:

  • Only small fur-bearing and feathered pets contained in secure, clean, hand-held cages are permitted on the buses
  • The cage should be appropriate to the pet's size
  • Cages must be small enough to fit on the owner’s lap
  • If there is room on the bus, you can place the cage beside you on the floor, the cage should not block the aisle or restrict other passengers.
  • One hand-held cage per passenger
  • Passengers must hold onto their cages at all times and are responsible for the safety of their pets
  • Your transit driver may refuse a trip if your pet poses a health or safety risk, or if it misbehaves
  • When the bus is busy, there may not be room for your pet

Certified assistance animals may continue to use public transit as always. Owners of assistance animals should be prepared to show the animal's verification of training.

Lost and Found

If you lose something on a bus, call Lost and Found at 250-995-5637, or complete the online lost and found form. If you find something on the bus, give it to the transit driver, who will deliver it to Lost & Found.

Lost articles may be claimed during the hours of 8am to 7pm, seven days a week at 520 Gorge Road E. Lost and found is located on the lower level of the building. You can only access it from the outside. To get there from the BC Transit parking lot, look to the left of the main entrance to a set of stairs. Go down the stairs, walk past the bike cage and open the first door on your right. Lost and Found is directly to your left.

BC Transit keeps lost articles for up to 30 days. If you call us and we have the article, we will hold it for a maximum of seven days. All unclaimed articles go to charitable organisations.

Bike Lockers

Bike Lockers are available at McTavish Park & Ride and at the Juan de Fuca Exchange. For information, please contact the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition at 250-480-5155.
