Accessible Transit on the Low-Floor Bus
Penticton's low-floor buses are equipped to carry two wheelchairs. For
passengers who have difficulty with stairs, the front of the bus can be
lowered to within 10 cm (4") of a sidewalk.
Passengers using wheelchairs and scooters can board and exit the bus
only at accessible bus stops. Undesignated bus stops present a variety
of logistical and safety problems. To check if a stop is wheelchair accessible,
call Busline at 492-5602.
Mobility Aids on board the Low Floor Bus
The maximum dimensions for mobility aid that can be safely accommodated
on low-floor buses are:
Length: 76cm (30")
Width: 73cm (29")
If you would like an evaluation of your mobility aid, or an orientation
to boarding the low-floor bus, call 492-5602.
Courtesy on the Accessible Buses
You can keep the ride pleasant and safe for as many people as possible
by using common sense and observing the following simple courtesy guidelines:
- Please keep priority seating at the front of the bus free for elderly
passengers and those with disabilities. Be aware that if a passenger
using a wheelchair or scooter boards, the driver may ask those in priority
seating to move. A person in a wheelchair or scooter has priority in
these seating locations at all times.
- You may bring your walker on the bus as long as it does not block
the aisle or affect the safety of other passengers. You do not normally
need to collapse your walker, but you do need to apply the brakes where
available. In cases where priority seating is unavailable (such as if
a person using a wheelchair boards the bus), an affected passenger should
collapse his or her walker (where possible) and move to another available
seat.
- If you are travelling with youngsters in strollers, you can wheel
the stroller onto any low-floor bus. Just park the stroller in the wheelchair
spot. Once you're on the bus, leave the child in the stroller, or fold
the stroller up and place it between the seats and seat the child on
your lap.
- Small two-wheel shopping carts are permitted on the bus if there
is space available, and if the cart fits between seats and does not
block the aisle. You may not bring larger carts and four-wheel buggies
on the bus.
- You may transport baggage and parcels on the bus as long the parcels
do not block aisles or affect passenger safety. The bus driver cannot
help you with your packages. You can keep your packages on your lap,
below your seat, and--where safe to do so--on the wheel well behind
the driver.
- Please exit through the rear doors whenever possible.
- For everyone's safety, please listen to and follow your driver's
instructions.
