Transit OperatorsOver 400 Transit Operators in the Victoria Regional Transit System provide the safe, reliable driving and cheerful customer service that BC Transit is known for. The work requires alertness, good judgement, safe driving habits, and an ability to deal with all kinds of people. Transit Operators are all full time. They work a wide variety of shifts, including split shifts, evenings and weekends, to provide customers with the service they need. Operators select their choice of shifts in order of seniority several times throughout the year. Some Transit Operators go on to become supervisors, training specialists or managers. To be considered, candidates for Transit Operator must have a demonstrated safe driver's record, although it is not necessary to have a Class II license. Our rigorous selection process emphasizes safety, customer service and good judgement. We train the successful applicants to drive a bus. Customer InformationWorking on a shift basis, our Customer Information Agents use computerized information to respond to public inquiries concerning transit service, schedules, routing, nearest departure points, fares, passes, BC Transit policies, as well as receiving complaints and commendations. CIA's bring to the job solid customer service experience, a quick mind and a keen eye for detail, and usually start in casual positions. MaintenanceOur maintenance staff of 75, including skilled tradespersons and service staff, keep the fleet in top condition. Mechanics typically have their Trades Qualification in Commercial Transport Mechanics, and are always learning new skills to keep pace with technological advances. At any one time, we usually have one Apprentice Mechanic on staff. PlanningPlanners work in both our Municipal Systems Division and Victoria Planning & Scheduling Department. Most planners are hired from outside the company, with a related university degree and experience in transportation planning. Planners are involved in long range transportation planning, feasibility studies, routing and scheduling of transit services throughout the province.
